Free Ways to Save Energy and Money

More information is provided in the posts but here’s a quick cheat-sheet – and a tally of the potential savings – of things you can do today to lower your bills and begin investing in our children’s futures.

  1. Don’t let the energy vampires drain your budget; turn things off!
  2. Cluster plugs at a power strip for quick and easy shutdown.
  3. Use power-saving settings on electronics.
  4. Turn your air conditioning thermostat up a notch.
  5. Keep your AC filters clean and the unit maintained.
  6. Use window coverings to keep your home cool and use fans to circulate the cold air.
  7. Reduce your electric hot water heater’s temperature setting.
  8. Help your water heater out with an insulating blanket.
  9. Always switch your electric water heater off if you’re away for two days or more.
  10. Use cold water for laundry.
  11. Add renewable power – line dry your clothes!
  12. Wash thoughtfully by consolidating clothes types and loads. Better for your clothes and your budget.
  13. Keep your fridge coils clean and efficient.
  14. Maximize cooking energy – use lids and share the heat.
  15. Run only full dishwasher loads, skip the heat dry and scrape, don’t rinse.
  16. Save extra drops of water - keep a watering can near the sink and give your plants a drink from the dregs.
  17. Check your toilet for water leaks.
  18. Cut the flush.
  19. Drive slow and steady to stretch your gas miles!
  20. Check your tire pressure regularly.
  21. Keep your trunk free of clutter – don’t pay to drive excess weight around.

The potential savings stack up to almost $700 a year! There are around 22,000 people in the City of Naples. If everyone saved that much it could add up to over $15 million spent on alternatives to new power plants.
