The holiday season can be a tough time for conscious consumers. How do you show your loved ones you care while using the greatest source of power we have – our purchasing power – to make a positive difference? Here are seven ideas that are also good for Naples.
1. Create Memories, They Last a Lifetime and Don’t Need Batteries
Give tickets to concerts and performances – check out The Naples Players, The Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, Opera Naples or the Naples City Improv. Or arrange an experience to enjoy together, something as simple as time at one of our City’s parks, or a picnic at the beach, a visit to a state or national park, a harbor cruise or enjoying day of biking along the coast.
2. Give of Your Time, its Truly Priceless
Helping friends and loved ones with specific tasks around the house, especially if they also help save energy and water, might be an unusual present but can be immeasurably valuable. Things like checking for water leaks, mulching the yard, planting a garden, changing an air conditioning filter or replacing incandescent bulbs with low energy versions would all make lasting difference.
3. Food, Forever
One of the most glorious aspects of our south Florida paradise is the tropical fruit trees that flourish here, providing delicious food and cleaner air. Consider starting an annual tradition by purchasing a new fruit tree each holiday season. Check with the Collier Fruit Grower’s Council and your local garden center for guidance and suggestions.
4. More Gifts that Keep Giving
Items that reduce energy and water use provide lasting impacts – the recipient will benefit every month when the bills come in. Your loved ones and the environment will thank you. Some ideas: low-flow showerheads or faucet aerators, energy efficient light bulbs, reusable grocery bags, water saving dual flush system, programmable thermostat or a nifty indoor clothes drying rack.
5. Patronize Our Local Eco-Attractions and Environmental Learning Centers
A wonderful present which offers long term enjoyment and learning opportunities is a membership to one of our local attractions. It’s also a great way to support the community. Examples in Naples include: the Naples Zoo, The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Naples Botanical Garden, or the Children’s Museum of Naples. While you are at it, plan an outing with the recipient to enjoy together!
6. Support Our Local Purveyors, Artisans and Craftspeople
Create a gift basket or cornucopia of items purchased at our local Farmer’s Markets, Art Galleries, or Craft Shows. Or, purchase a membership or class tuition at one of our cultural establishments. The United Arts Council of Collier County provides a comprehensive list of local arts-focused places and people.
7. Donate to a Good Cause in Someone’s Name
“I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catchers mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.” Maya Angelou. With so many still struggling in the tough economy, donations or time given to local charitable organizations is perhaps the ultimate gift. The Community Foundation of Collier County provides a resource guide to our area’s non-profits.
